44 Children and Teachers Rescued as Flash Floods Inundate Johor Bahru Kindergarten

Firefighters evacuate stranded preschool group by boat following heavy afternoon downpour

JOHOR BAHRU – Firefighters evacuated 37 children and seven teachers after floodwaters inundated a preschool and nursery here on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the group stranded inside.

The incident occurred at the Umiku Sayang Kindergarten and Nursery along Jalan Muhd Amin following a prolonged, heavy downpour across the city.

According to Larkin Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Senior Fire Officer I Nakish Nekmat, emergency responders received a distress call at 3:53 p.m.

A 10-member rescue team was immediately dispatched with a Fire Rescue Tender and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle, travelling roughly 10 kilometres to reach the site.

Upon arrival at 4:14 p.m., the crew commandeered a volunteer’s boat to transfer the stranded teachers and children across the rising floodwaters to safety at the nearby Tepian Food Court Surau.

"All victims were successfully evacuated, and no injuries were reported," Nakish said in a statement.

The heavy rain triggered widespread flash flooding in multiple parts of Johor Bahru, submerging major thoroughfares, cutting off access for motorists, and stranding commuters in severe traffic gridlock.
