Created by George Kay, the eight-part divorce drama tracks an acrimonious split between a tech mogul and a film star
LOS ANGELES – HBO is set to premiere "War" on Thursday, an eight-episode legal anthology series exploring the bitter, high-stakes unraveling of a marriage between two prominent public figures.
Created by George Kay, the series centers on Morgan Henderson (Dominic West), a tech entrepreneur behind the curated social media platform Zephyr, and Carla Duval (Sienna Miller), an acclaimed film actress. Their long-standing marriage collapses after Morgan is lured into an orchestrated infidelity setup involving Flora Monroe (Rose Williams), an acquaintance of Carla who documents the encounter, setting off a fierce legal battle over substantial financial assets.
The dispute quickly draws in two contrasting legal operations. Carla is represented by Taylor & Byrne, a boutique startup run by married partners Nicholas Taylor (James McArdle) and Serena Byrne (Phoebe Fox), who are expecting their first child and face existential financial risk if they lose the case. Morgan is backed by Cathcarts, an established, old-guard practice led by the combative St. John Smallwood (Pip Torrens), senior partner Beatrice Ubosi (Nina Sosanya), and David Schill (Miles Jupp).
Complicating the rivalry is Johnny (Archie Renaux), an ambitious job seeker pressured by his partner Bella (Honor Swinton Byrne), who enters Taylor & Byrne to covertly act as an informant for Cathcarts.
Directed by lead director Ben Taylor with cinematography by Oli Russell, the London-set production chronicles the progression of the dispute through mediation, arbitration, and formal court proceedings. The series also examines broader tensions, including operational pressure on Morgan’s tech company and Carla’s career anxieties within the film industry.
The ensemble cast includes Celia Imrie and Archie Panjabi as courtroom barristers, Nick Mohammed as a financial advisor, and Aran Murphy as Gabriel, Carla’s 16-year-old son and Morgan’s stepson. Emma Laird and Shaheen Jafargholi feature as junior legal staffers Molly Giordano and Saeed Masood, alongside an original score composed by Oli Julian.
